Have the Right Packing Supplies
Now lets talk about the actual packing tips! An important factor for packing your home is to have the correct supplies- correct size boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, tape, etc.
Let's start with using the correct box size. You may gravitate to using the biggest box you can find and shoving whatever in it- that's where you go wrong. We advise to use small and medium size boxes, this stops you from over packing one box to the point where you can't pick it up, or it causes back pain. Avoiding the large boxes will help you create the perfect medium of weight! Small boxes are perfect for dishware, fragile items, and books. If you're not careful dishware and books can make a box heavy-weighing more than 40 pounds! Small boxes also reduce the risk of your fragile items like dishes, glass-made items, etc. breaking or cracking. For items like lamp shades, bed sheets, and misc. items we advise to use medium boxes. We advise to stay away from large boxes unless you're packing single large items, a bunch of small light items, etc.
Next the correct protection wrap, there's many options to pick from such as bubble wrap, packing paper, dish packs, etc. For dishes, we recommend packing paper which can be substituted with newspaper. Bubble wrap is also a good option but it takes up more room in the box, packing paper allows you to fit more dishes into a single box while still preventing breakage. Bubble wrap is good for china cabinets, glass inserts, TVs, mirrors, artwork, pictures, etc. It's easier to wrap around flat items and slide into TV/mirror boxes.
Smaller packing supplies such as box tape is helpful in making sure your boxes stay together and markers are helpful in labeling your boxes so you're not searching every box for one item.
Make a Plan and Layout
Having a plan for what you will pack first, color coordination for items or rooms, and a check list will help you in the long run! It will help you avoid loosing items, searching for hours for something, and forgetting to pack certain items. We've also seen clients put different colors for boxes with fragile items, items they want right away, and items they wont need for a while. These small plans and lists can be the make or break for how stressful your move is!
